DESCRIPTION
GEM COAT is a single pack, Solvent Based, Aliphatic, Moisture Cure Polyurethane with a high level of resistance to yellowing and the direct effects of sunlight. GEM COAT cures by reaction with moisture in the air to an extremely tough and durable film.
GEM COAT can be used as a standalone topical coating over ground concrete giving a high end long lasting high gloss finish or as a top coat on Flake Systems allowing the system to be successfully used inside and outside in full sun.
RECOMMENDED USES
As a top coat over the most of epoxy coatings.
➢ Concrete surfaces for external & internal applications.
➢ Top coat for Flake Systems
FEATURES& BENEFITS
➢ Good Chemical Resistance
➢ Excellent UV Resistance
➢ Helps protect base coatings (e.g. Epoxies)
➢ Remains clear long term
➢ Easy clean gloss finish
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
This is a general guide for 7 days exposure on cured film.
Prompt clean-up is always best practice using Epoxy Thinners.
Excellent Resistance: Aliphatic Solvent
Good Resistance: Alkali, Aromatic Solvent, Mineral Acid, Water
Fair Resistance: Alcohol, Organic Acid, Oxidising Acid SURFACE
PREPARATION
PREMIUM EPOXY COATINGS recommend a small-area trial of at least two (2) coats of GEM COAT be applied to ensure compatibility with the material to be coated. GEM COAT as a Protective Glaze. Surface should be sanded to remove gloss. Apply two coats of GEM COAT
over other suitable coatings. Allow 6 hours minimum and up to 24 hours maximum at 20°C between coats. This will achieve reasonable level of UV resistance for internal application. GEM COAT as a Total System. GEM COAT as a Total System will require a minimum of two (2) coats. Allow 6 hours minimum and 24 hours maximum at 20°C between coats under normal curing conditions. On concrete surfaces 2 coats are usually sufficient to provide a chemical and solvent resistant, dust free surface.
Application
Ensure all surfaces are sound and free of all foreign matter and that concrete is free of all laitance prior to coating. Apply GEM COAT direct from the container using a brush, roller or lamb’s wool pad. As GEM COAT is somewhat self-levelling and tends to dry rapidly, it is best applied quickly and allowed to flow out to a smooth surface. On application make sure to keep a wet edge. Keep over-rolling to a minimum; avoid if possible. GEM COAT cures by reacting with moisture in the atmosphere. In general, the higher the temperature and humidity the faster the products will dry. Acceptable curing conditions allow re-coating in approximately 6-18 hours at 20°C. If longer than 72 hours has elapsed, then the GEM COAT should be lightly, but thoroughly sanded to ensure inter-coat adhesion. In all cases check that each coat of GEM COAT has sufficiently cured before re-coating, otherwise frying or lifting of the coating may occur. When temperature / humidity is high, 10%Epoxy Thinners can be added to GEM COAT to slow the curing process.
Coverage
Standalone system over smooth flat concrete 8-10m2. Depending on porosity of substrate &application method. 2 x coats are recommended. Top coat over APC Flake System 4-6m2 per litre
Return To Service
Light pedestrian traffic 24 hours @ 20°C.Vehicle traffic 72 hours @ 20°C.SHELF LIFE 3 Months after opening.12 Months after the date of manufacture unopened.POT LIFE Pot Life 30 –45 minutes dependent on the temperature.
Important Notes
Pour out only sufficient GEM COAT for immediate use into a suitable solvent resistant clean dry container, as it will prematurely gel if exposed for too long to the air. Do not return unused GEM COAT to the original container. Reseal original container tightly immediately. Clean material from spout thread before re sealing and avoid prolonged storage of part-filled cans. It is recommended a small-area trial of at least two coats of GEM COAT be applied to ensure compatibility with the material to be coated.
GEM COAT is not designed as an external coating for timber floors and walls or timber cladding.
